College Application Essay Coach
Candace Kearns Read (BFA Dramatic Writing, MFA Creative Nonfiction) is uniquely qualified to assist high school students with their college application essays. She has over 20 years of experience helping writers develop their true stories into meaningful and compelling writing, and she has helped literally thousands of writers conceptualize, draft, revise and polish their work to achieve their writing goals.
We all have a great story to tell, and a great way to tell it. Candace will help you find that story and shape it into a powerful personal statement and/or supplemental essay for your college applications.
Candace’s consulting services vary depending on the needs of the student, and can be adapted to suit your family’s schedule.
Personal Statement and Supplemental Essay Coaching
Through a combination of emails, phone calls, and in-person meetings or Skype calls, Candace will coach your high school student through the entire essay writing process. She will not write the essay for your student! Her approach helps young writers generate ideas, develop, draft and revise their essay until it sparkles.
By analyzing essay prompts, studying models of successful application essays, and completing Candace’s unique and powerful brainstorming exercises, students will find the best subject for their essay as well as the best style and structure to effectively communicate that subject. The goal is to develop the student’s unique voice and allow it to show through on the page of your personal statements and supplemental essays.
The colleges you want are looking for the essay only you can write!
We will do much of our work via email in order to accommodate your family’s busy schedule. After an initial live meeting (either in person or via Skype) we will begin bi-weekly email exchanges. Students are given a weekly assignment to be reviewed and critiqued by Candace, after which she will give the student feedback and assign the next week’s activity.
Through this process, high school students will benefit from Candace’s highly successful brainstorming exercises, topic generation and development strategies, structural and stylistic guidance, and revision coaching.
The Bottom Line
Depending on how much the student has already developed their essay before working with Candace, the entire process from beginning to end will take between 4 and 16 weeks.
Billing is $65.00 an hour, with an expected pace of two billing hours per week. This includes phone calls, Skype or in-person meetings, reading and critiques, and preparation of each student’s individualized assignments for the week.
The minimum cost for families is $260.00 for a 4-week coaching contract, and the maximum is $1,040.00 for a 16-week coaching contract.
